Dr. Hodgson takes tremendous pride in providing the best otology and neuro-otology care in the in the Pacific Northwest. He firmly believes that medicine is a service industry and that patients deserve the best efforts of everyone on the staff. He is constantly seeking the finest and most current methods of otologic treatment for his patients. Dr. Hodgson offers both surgical and non-surgical treatments for middle and inner ear pathologies. His practice welcomes pediatric and adult patients and we accept most major insurances.
Although he has practiced in Portland, Oregon for his entire career, Dr. Hodgson's reputation as a highly skilled and compassionate physician has brought patients from many surrounding regions including Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Alaska. He specializes in chronic or complex ear conditions including cholesteatoma, otosclerosis, Meniere's Disease and vertigo, among others.
In keeping with state of the art care, Dr. Hodgson works closely with Dr. Dana McCray, our clinical and dispensing audiologist. The practice offers a variety of technologies and solutions for persons with sensorineural, conductive or mixed hearing loss.

Dr. Hodgson, a native Oregonian and second-generation otolaryngologist, received his Bachelors degree in Biology from Oregon State University in 1979. He then attended Oregon Health Sciences University to receive his M.D. in 1983. He completed a general surgery internship at Michigan State, then returned for residency training at OHSU which he completed in 1988. In 1989, he received sub-specialty fellowship training in otology, neurotology and skull base surgery with the Portland Ear Medical Group.
Dr. Hodgson has been in private practice as a Neurotologist since 1989. As such, he limits his practice to the diagnosis and management of disorders that affect the ear, its surrounding structures, and their relationship to the brain. This includes medical and surgical treatments for disorders affecting hearing and balance, facial paralysis, management of chronic ear disease, infections and tumor growths of the skull base. In keeping with state of the art care, Dr. Hodgson is also trained in implantable hearing technologies such as cochlear implants and bone anchored hearing appliances (or BAHA). His office also offers full service hearing aid fittings by a licensed and certified audiologist.
Dr. Hodgson is board certified with the American Board of Otolaryngology. His professional society memberships include the American Academy of Otolaryngology/Head & Neck Surgery, the American Medical Association, the Oregon Medical Association, the Medical Society of Metropolitan Portland and the North American Skull Base Society. He has been the otologist for the craniofacial disorders clinic at Legacy Emanuel Children's Hospital for over ten years. This is a volunteer position serving children with cleft lip and palate, as well as other genetic disorders involving the head and neck.
In his free time, Dr. Hodgson enjoys a wide variety of sports and outdoor activities with his wife and two children. An avid "soccer dad", he enjoys going to his sons' games and tournaments.

Dr. Dana McCray completed her undergraduate training in 1989 with a degree in Communication Disorders from San Diego State University. She became a licensed hearing aid dispenser and practiced in California until 1995 when she entered graduate school in Oregon. Dana received her Masters of Science in Audiology at Portland State University and served externships at the V.A. Medical Center, Starkey Laboratories and the Washington School for the Deaf. Her clinical fellowship year was spent with exclusive focus on vestibular and balance disorders and their related treatments. In 2006, she received her doctorate in audiology from the Arizona School of Health Sciences. Dana has worked with Dr. Hodgson since 1999 providing a variety of diagnostic and rehabilitative audiology services. She is also his clinic assistant and coordinates many aspects of patient care within the office. Dr. McCray is a Fellow of the American Academy of Audiology (FAAA), which has recognized her as an outstanding scholar in continuing education every year since 2001. She has held the certificate of clinical competence (CCC-A) from the American Speech-Language & Hearing Association and maintains membership in the American Auditory Society and the National Association of the Deaf.
Dr. McCray is also an educator and served six years as an adjunct faculty member at Portland State University where she taught the beginning and intermediate American Sign Language courses as well as auditory rehabilitation for the Department of Speech & Hearing Sciences. Since 2003, she has been teaching the ASL courses at George Fox University in Newberg, Oregon.
A former professional musician, Dana enjoys playing the piano and flute in her spare time. Most summers, you can find her collaborating with Classic Greek Theatre of Oregon as a rehearsal accompanist or music director. She’s also a current member of a local Portland drum corp, The Last Regiment of Syncopated Drummers (and yes, she wears custom earplugs when playing).
